Biographical note: Carl Schenk, a native of Germany, was born about 1840. He graduated from the Polytechnicum in Darmstadt. Schenk emigrated to the United States and settled in Newport, Kentucky. He went to work for the Kentucky Geological Survey in the 1870s under Nathaniel Southgate Shaler. Shaler recommended Schenk for his next post as surveyor with the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, which Schenk took in 1879.
